Month of Music Day 2 Geoff Moore & The Distance Threads Threads There Is A Thread Running Between The First And The Last Breath That We Breathe And In This Strand Of Flesh And Bone Reside The Hopes And Dreams We Call Our Own. [Chorus:] And There's A Hand That Sews The Threads Together Around One Strand Of Saving Scarlet Thread Come As You Are Weary, Worn, And Tattered Come And Take Your Place Among The Threads. There Is A Thread Sometimes Unseen Moving Through Life's Tapestry And When This Strand Enters A Soul It's Woven To The One That Makes Us Whole. [Chorus:] And There's A Hand That Sews The Threads Together Around One Strand Of Saving Scarlet Thread Come As You Are Weary, Worn And Tattered Come And Take Your Place Among The Threads Come And Take Your Place Among The Threads.

My Take:

The year was 1998. It was my last (official) year of college. Change was in the air. I'd just spent almost two years fooling myself that I was in a real relationship with a woman, constantly ignoring the glaringly obvious signals. But that isn't the point of the story. Despite this awkward situation, I took some time to revel in some of the accomplishments of this year, college degree, commissioned as a Lieutenant, able to fit comfortably in size 34 jeans...and having a kicking sound-system in my Pathfinder. It was a good year. This song is slow, contemplative, and allusion. It's really more complicated in theology than I'm used to, as I like things as simple as possible. And this song's words can be taken as simply as they sound; just as the threads. I'm also reminded of another story, that of the Fates, the spinners of threads into the fabric of everyone's lives. Now, Moore and company aren't making a pitch for polytheistic monastic teachings, they are simply taking a story and cooping it to fit their needs. The point of the song is that there is one thread that we are all sown around (the incarnate Christ) and it is all made by the hand of the Master (the Father). All these years later, I make people shut up and turn up the radio when this comes on.
