What is this MofM thing?
Each morning in the month of June, I'm writing a story about a special song in my life. So, I call it the "Month of Music." Or, for shorters, MofM. I'm thinking of making some t-shirts. The inspiration came from a certain self-starter who shall remain nameless. But the concept is simple. Behold the ramblings of said nameless self-starter:
I've been reflecting a lot lately on the music that has shaped my life thus far. My tastes, musically, cannot really be placed into a single genre (rock/pop/rap/classical, etc.). I've been all across the board, from Snoop to Sister Hazel, from Creed to The Chemical Brothers and back again. I can say I enjoy nearly all types of music, except for perhaps reggae or polka and the like. However, for a majority of my life, the one thing that has separated me from my music-loving peers is my love for Christian music. (Insert groan here) Yes, Christian music. Christian music, often referred to as "gospel" or "inspirational" has received bad press since before I was born. Then again, before I was born, Christian/Gospel music was pretty lame. But, oh, we've come a long way in the past 25 years. That said, it has always frustrated me when my friends have heard the words "christian" and "music" come out of my mouth and I automatically recieve an eye roll.
Creed? Yuck. I mean, yuck. Creed? Anyways, in order to make my mark on this here idea, I looked into what makes me tick. There are three things that I cannot be beat on: Macintoshes; Contemporary Christian Music; and making fun of movies. Do not start an argument with me on any of these, you will loose. (as I write this, the original MST3K theme pops up in iTunes) There are so many meaningful things that come up when I remember where I've been, and where I'm going. Back in 1998 when I started Meadowhill.org, I never imagined that the Internet would be so large and amazing. And I never thought that I would be able to be seen by so many people. Well, if I ever stopped moving, that is. There's nothing like going on and off the Internet every once in a while. And there was that whole War thing in 2002-2003. That killed the momentum. In fact, I've been in steady decline from my peak in Mississippi, when I was leading Bible study and packing a fellowship hall with grade 6-12 kids. Since I left Mississippi, my walk has been completely personal. I really didn't feel the move to talk to other people. Well, recent events have led me to a crossroads. I think I've finally exposed myself to myself as being just as sinful as I thought I was. It's really liberating to know that you aren't as good as you think you are. So I was offered a choice (by God) in what to do next: stay on the same course, or do something about it. Considering the past couple of months that would just plain amaze you, if I could tell you what happened (I can't). Suffice it to say, even the people that think they know only know part of the story. This MofM is here as part of my turn to the center of God's will. He has a plan for me, chock full of all kind of goodies, and just waiting for me to take it. All I have to do is take it. Enjoy the month.
