Month of Music Day 17 Rebecca St. James You Then Me God It's my turn, it's not your turn It's my turn, get outta my way It's my turn, go on complain I'm comin' through anyway Don't ask me why I'm like this But lately I'm wonderin' if It's come to pass That the last shall be first and the first shall be last Then the voice says... [Chorus:] Here's the way it oughtta be You then me, then you then me Well, I pray one day we'll all agree And take it you then me, then you then me Life could go you then me, then you then me It's easy, you wait then go It's easy, so make your move It's easy, don't clown around Could've gone six times by now But no sir, you gotta be a pain Or is this your own way of sayin' We should all cool down And be more like the man who was born back in Bethlehem town? I betcha He'd say... [Chorus:] Here's the way it oughtta be You then me, then you then me Well, I pray one day we'll all agree And take it you then me, then you then me Life could go you then me, then you then me If we could only put You first Maybe this ugly trend could one day be reversed It's your turn, it's not my turn It's your turn - well, let's just say We'll trade off - first you then me Then after that, we might agree Let's try it, it could be good And what if one day it should Really come to pass That the last shall be first and the first shall be last Betcha we'd say [Chorus:] Here's the way it oughtta be You then me, then you then me Well, I pray one day we'll all agree And take it you then me, then you then me Life could go you then me, then you then me

My Take:

We were going to check out the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Me and G, just to find out what it was like to be gradiated from college, and maybe enrolled in some Theology program. Just to do something great. Well, the morning came, and we headed to Nawlins, and we'd just gone to see RSJ when she came to Hattiesburg (and she was totally into me - a story for another time). I remembered to print out directions for the trip down there. And I left them in the printer. We didn't find this out until G asks me where the directions were. After shuffling through every pocket I could possibly find, I realized I never grabbed it on the way out the door. We were flying blind on Interstate 20. And it was all my fault. Well, in retrospect, not _all_ my fault. She coulda got a map, too. But she was relying on me, and I let her down. When we did get to New Orleans, I was hoping I'd remember where to turn. Needless to say, I didn't. We drove through downtown and all the way through town, and never saw any NOBTS. Hippies and Catholic churches, but no NOBTS. Gina thought it would be a good idea to turn around when we saw the "Baton Rouge 32 miles" sign. We eventually stopped at a recruiter, and I got directions to the place. Yep, it's the first exit. I'm a genius. A map-reading genius. We get there, way late, and take the tour. As we were looking around, I could sense that G was not digging the 4 year course-load. She was looking for something a little more...immediate. I, however, was all kind of digging academia. But we weren't there for me. And I knew that she wasn't going to do this. It was actually disappointing. As we were driving back, she was still upset with me. She was also not loving the Seminary thing. She was really not loving anything. But we at least entertaining ourselves with You Then Me. I think we listened to that song 50 times coming back to Hattiesburg. Not sure why, either. We just liked it, I guess. A few weeks later, she'd find the love of her life, I'd never see her again, and I'd never call Hattiesburg my home again.
