My Take:

My Dad has most of my life been my music director in Church. He chose songs that we do for Sunday Morning specials. One song was Redeemer by Nicole C. Mullen. I found it odd the first night that we practiced the song that we were doing it, because this is an old country music-loving bunch of rednecks, and this is a pretty hip song. Although, I admit, it does have a nice six-string part in it. And, the soloist was doing her first feature. She was active in the choir, but not one who you would normally think of as being a strong soloist. But with a lot of encouragement, she performed the song really well. In fact, I was honestly impressed with how well she did. I guess that's why I started liking this song so much. That, and it was a really good song. It won the Dove Award (like the Christian Grammies) for Song of the Year. That's what happens when you've got a great song. Okay, so it's a really good song, and our singer nailed it when we sung it. So...is that why it's on the list? Well, no. We did lots of songs that sounded incredible when we performed them. Then it must be because it has some meaningful value at some time in your life. Again, no, there are a lot of songs I first heard and remember from trying times in my life. That isn't the reason for inclusion on my list. All right, I'll bite...it's because she's black, isn't it? We have a winner! NOT! (Wow, that sounds as lame as I thought it would. I'm never using NOT! again.) No, my list is completely Affirmative Action free. All songs must get here on their own merit. So, if it isn't memorable, isn't meaningful, or filling a quota, then what's it doing in the list? Easy...I turn up the radio and make people shut up when it's on. Do I need another reason? Honestly, that's it. I just like the song. A lot. I have no reason why, I just do. If you were expecting a better explanation, then you're going to have to get used to being disappointed.
