My Take:

This song is actually controversial, not because of the words, but because of the sound. I'm constantly amazed at how this song won the Dove Award for the Song of the Year, yet was almost universally condemned for being the music of the Devil. Especially from my Dad. The reason this song's on the list is that it was the first song that started a run of about 8 years where CCM was the driving force in the music industry. Bands were starting to comp the sounds coming out of Nashville studios. That's where the bulk of my music collection was started. This song's never gotten old, because most Christian radio stations are afraid to play it. It just sounds too controversial, I guess. Insert ironic "Jesus freak" joke here.
