Several years ago, I was doing a mockup for my first non–meadowhill.orgian site. Top of the page (the title, as it were) read, “I AM NOT AN ARTIST.” Five years later, I would love to correct my callous mistake.

I am an artist. I just don’t paint, or design websites, or make pottery, or chisel stuff. I don’t put sandwiches together, for that matter. But I am an artist.

For better or worse, I’m a singer. And a lousy guitar player. And a drummer. I’d call myself a musician, but — ya know — the whole ‘singer’ thing.

It isn’t a surprise that I also like music, right? Always listening to new stuff. I don’t really have a genre for myself, but God made me a perfect 2nd Tenor for Southern Gospel quartets while at the same time giving me the love of raprock and Nü Metal.

Yeah, figure that one out.

What gets me going, listening to other people, is that we’ve got that sympathetic bond between us. The one where we all get into each other’s music so easily. The one where we pick up the groove in a way you just can’t with people any other way?

Or the way we totally tell ourselves that we can totally play that. Because we can. All we have to do is, you know, practice a little bit, get our chops back. But that wasn’t really all that impressive. Anybody can do it. Just takes time.

A little practice.

I’m so in denial.

What prompted this

I made a promise with myself in January that I would use that guitar I bought back in 2004 as something other than a dust collector. Today I found some videos with a girl on the evil YouTube that blows my lametackular guitar skills away. And she was just playing ukulele.

Showed up by a ukulele–playing girl. Not how I envisioned my life turning out.
